BRODRIBB, (Gerald).
THE ART OF NICHOLAS FELIX. A GENERAL SURVEY AND DETAILED CATALOGUE OF HIS WORK AS AN ARTIST.
Published in Ewell by J.W. McKenzie, 1985.
8vo. 78pp. 6 plates. Original cloth in dust-wrapper. Good condition.
LIMITED EDITION of 220 numbered copies, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. A catalogue of all the known paintings, drawings and prints by Nicholas Wanostrocht, who played under the pseudonym Felix. Felix was one of the greatest cricketers of his time, playing for Kent and Surrey between 1834 and 1852. In later years he became a renowned artist, and his subjects included many contemporary cricketers. Gerald Brodribb provides scholarly research and has traced and catalogued all known paintings and prints by Felix. Each item contains detailed notes by the author who was an authority on Nicholas Felix. Born in 1804 of Flemish extraction, Nicholas Wanostrocht changed his name to Felix because he felt that cricket's association with gambling and betting in the 1820s did not befit his position of schoolmaster and later headmaster. Padwick II, 3405. ............................................................................. Wisden Cricket Monthly, September 1985: ...Brodribb's survey, which has taken years of industrious research now gathers together all that is ever likely to be known about Felix's pen and brushwork...he describes in fine detail the 319 items so far identified as Felix's work. ....................................................................... The Cricketer International, October 1985: Felix became a professional painter on his retirement from active cricket and in this illustrated 78-page monograph Dr. Brodribb meticulously lists 319 of his known pictures with their provenance. ........................................................................ Wisden Cricketers' Almanack 1986: The most complete annotated catalogue ever...made of his paintings, drawings and engravings...A most worthy piece of cricket scholarship.
