ST. IVO AND THE ASHES. A CORRECT, TRUE AND PARTICULAR HISTORY OF THE HON. IVO BLIGH'S CRUSADE IN AUSTRALIA. ILLUSTRATED BY M.C.B. MASSIE. FOREWORD BY JOHN ARLOTT. TOGETHER WITH A COMPLETE RECORD OF THE TOUR OF AUSTRALIA BY THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS DURING 1882 AND 1883, REPRINTED FROM JOHN WISDEN'S ALMANACK FOR 1884. Published in Ewell by J.W. McKenzie, 1978. 8vo. 100pp. 11 plates. Original cloth in dust-wrapper. Good condition. LIMITED EDITION of 75 numbered copies. An account of the 1882-83 England cricket tour of Australia, together with a full account of the tour reprinted from Wisden Cricketers' Almanack for 1884. With a new foreword by John Arlott. A reprint of the book first published in Melbourne in 1883, giving sketchy details of the tour, with full scores of the four Test matches and two matches against Victoria. The plates are amusing cartoons by Massie showing England's defeat. This tour immediately followed the 1882 Australian tour of England, when England suffered their first-ever defeat at home. This upset led to a mock obituary notice to the death of English cricket, and Ivo Bligh pledged at the outset of this 1882-83 tour to bring back 'The Ashes' of English cricket. The team included R.G. Barlow, W. Barnes, W. Bates, Ivo Bligh, F. Morley, W.W. Read, A.G. Steel, C.T. Studd and G.F. Vernon. Padwick, 4408. .............................................................................. The Cricketer International, November 1978: It was the only separately published account of Ivo Bligh's 1882-83 tour to Australia, and is one of the rarities of cricket literature...This is essentially an item for genuine collectors... ....................................................... Wisden Cricketers' Almanack 1980: With foreword by John Arlott, plus more detailed information. ................................................. LONG [ref: 51581] £150.00 enquire buy |
