A diary published 135 years after the author's death, with an entry for 6th May 1676 of cricket played on a visit to Aleppo. This was selected by C.J. Britton in his 1929 publication Cricket Books. The 100 Best. Rait Kerr: National Book League Catalogue, no. 17: 'The author, whose diary was published 135 years after his death, became a naval chaplain rather late in life, as the result of financial embarrassments...In May, 1676, while on a visit to Aleppo, he recounts how...'the English residents and the Consul rode out of the city...and indulged in various sports, including cricket.' Not recorded by Taylor, Catalogue of Cricket Literature, 1906. Goldman, Bibliography of Cricket, 1937: 'Contains one of the earliest references to cricket.' Padwick, 851.
