ALLETSON'S INNINGS. A NEW EDITION INCLUDING PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED LETTERS, WRITTEN BY E.B. ALLETSON AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES, TO JOHN ARLOTT.
Published in Ewell by J.W. McKenzie, 1991.
8vo. 103pp. Illustrated. Original cloth in dust-wrapper. Good condition.
LIMITED EDITION of 250 numbered copies, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. A detailed account of one of the most remarkable innings of sustained aggression in the history of cricket, played by Ted Alletson in the match between Sussex and Nottinghamshire at Hove, 18th-20th May 1911. When Alletson began his innings Nottinghamshire had three second innings wickets remaining and were only 9 runs ahead. He then proceeded to score 189 runs in only 90 minutes, including 142 in 40 minutes, and saved the match for Nottinghamshire. In one over from E.H. Killick, which included two no-balls, Alletson scored a then record 34 runs. This magnificent innings was the highlight of Alletson's otherwise uneventful career. Although he played for Nottinghamshire between 1906 and 1914, this was his only century in first-class cricket. This book was first published in 1957 and this new edition is much enhanced by the inclusion of correspondence John Arlott received in the 1950s from various cricketers who played in the match, giving their recollections of the game and Alletson's innings. See Padwick 7277. ...................................................................... The Cricketer International, December 1992: John McKenzie has now produced a handsome new 103-page edition of the book...To return to the monograph is to rediscover Arlott's meticulous scholarship, his sensitivity and dedication to his task. With the aid of Roy Webber, he statistically reconstructed Alletson's historic innings, but, more importantly, he fleshes out the event by his conversations and correspondence with Alletson, John and George Gunn and others. The new edition includes the complete text of all these letters...It is a fascinating monograph, beautifully produced, with reproductions of scorecard and scorebook among its treasures. ............................................ Cricket Lore, Issue Eight, February 1993: This new edition of Alletson's Innings...has more to offer than the original; Messrs. Arlott and Alletson are far better served in presentation and paper quality than they were in 1957. In addition the new edition features, in full, much of the correspondence between author and cricketer. ............................................. Wisden Cricketers' Almanack 1993: Reprint of 1957 edition, with supplementary material. ...................................................................................................................................................
