WITH THE BOOKPLATE OF A.E. WINDER. THE STORY OF THE CHARISMATIC COLLECTOR WHO ACQUIRED THE JOHN ARLOTT CRICKET LIBRARY. Published in Ewell by J.W. McKenzie, 2008. 8vo. [6]+283pp. 16 pages of plates. Original cloth in dust-wrapper. Good condition. LIMITED EDITION of 175 numbered copies, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. During the 1970s Tony Winder amassed one of the finest cricket libraries and collection of cricket memorabilia ever assembled. He bought avidly from major auction houses, book dealers, and was also fortunate that at this time several major private collections came onto the market which he bought. In 1979 this culminated in the purchase of the superb cricket collection of the famous cricket writer and broadcaster John Arlott. The full story of this purchase is detailed. In 1985 Winder's business empire collapsed. He was declared bankrupt, and the A.E. Winder cricket collection was sold by auction at Phillips in November 1985. Tony Winder died six years later, aged only 47. This book gives an insight into his passion for cricket and collecting, and most importantly includes a list of the books and memorabilia in his collection, with a record of source, purchase date and cost, all meticulously recorded by Winder on his card index. With a facsimile of the Phillips catalogue of the Winder auction, together with a list of the prices realised. This record of the accumulation and dispersal of a great cricket collection should be in the library of any cricket lover, both for its poignant story and the invaluable reference material it contains.
