PRESENTED BY A.J. GASTON TO ST. MATTHIAS CRICKET CLUB, BRIGHTON, SIGNED, INSCRIBED AND DATED on the front endpaper. Grace had been playing first-class cricket for nearly thirty years when, with the help of his friend W. Methven Brownlee, he related his experiences against an historical background. Gaston, Cricket Books and Their Prices, (in The Cricket Field, Volume III, 1894]: 'This is a splendid gift book to any cricketer, and reflects great credit upon Dr. W.G. Grace's literary coadjutor, Mr. W. Methven Brownlee. Possibly the most interesting pages are the really excellent jottings on Celebrities I have met.
