Taylor, Catalogue of Cricket Literature, 1906, page 34: 'The first four vols. are entirely out of print, Vol. 3 being most rare'. Britton, Cricket Books, The 100 Best, 1929, pages 25-27: 'The foundation stone of a cricket library.' Arlott, Cricket. A Reader's Guide, 1950, pages 9-10: 'the standard reference book of major matches and players between 1744 and 1878, with biographies continued in Volume XV, to include the chief players making their first appearances up to 1898.' Volumes I-IV were published in 1862 and 1863 by Lillywhite, volumes V-XV were published between 1876 and 1895 by Longmans on behalf of Marylebone Cricket Club, volumes XVI to date have been published by R.
