SISSONS, (Ric).
THE DON MEETS THE BABE. THE 1932 AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TOUR OF NORTH AMERICA. FOREWORD BY SIR DONALD BRADMAN.
Published in Ewell by J.W. McKenzie, 1995.
8vo. 125pp. 16 plates and other text Illustrations. Original cloth in dust-wrapper.
LIMITED EDITION of 250 numbered copies, SIGNED BY BRADMAN AND THE AUTHOR. The only account of the 1932 Australian cricket tour of North America, compiled with the assistance of Sir Donald Bradman's scrapbooks of the tour. The many social events for the Australians included being entertained by the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth in his box at the Yankee Stadium during a game of baseball, allowing a unique opportunity for a meeting of the two greatest hitters of a moving ball in the history of sport. The Australian team also played cricket at Hollywood with Charles Aubrey Smith and Boris Karloff. The tour was organised by Arthur Mailey on behalf of the sponsors who specified that the tour would only take place if Bradman was in the team. This was not easy as Bradman was due to marry his childhood sweetheart, Jessie Menzies. This difficulty was overcome when they decided to make the tour their honeymoon. The Australian team included, D.G. Bradman, A.A. Mailey, S.J. McCabe, A. Kippax, H. Carter and V.Y. Richardson. Some were past their best but several were still in their prime. Of these Bradman was outstanding. He played 51 innings and scored 3,777 runs at an average of 102. He also took 24 wickets on the tour, which included six wickets in one eight-ball over. Together with facsimile reprints of two pre-tour brochures: Welcome Australia, originally published by Illinois Cricket Association, and Australian Cricketers Good Will Tour 1932.
